The question has been put to me several
times from different people I’ve met on the web as to the origins of my screen name. So I decided to provide this little fact about me and some of my interests:
The screen/user name of Avaloyuru
came about for a number of reasons, primarily the search for a “catchy” one that did not require numbers and at
least appeared to be something that possibly could actually be somewhat pronounceable.
I’m sure like most people, coming up with a screen name that you like and that’s actually available can
be a truly daunting task.
I searched out my fascination with
science fiction. I have been a fan of theatrical science fiction more so than
reading it since I can remember. While my preference is more toward full length
movies rather than a weekly series, I loved the original Star Trek and grew to like Star Trek; The Next Generation as well
as Star Trek Voyager. I’ve been a big fan of BattleStar Galactica since
the early 1980’s. While I found that most of the series programming ranged
from complete idiotic (in my opinion) to actually somewhat funny, I did enjoy watching shows like “Dark Angel”
and “The X Files.”
Regarding the literary aspect of
science fiction/fantasy, one of my absolute favorites has been Tolkien after having to read “The Hobbit” back
in the early 60’s while in grade school. Moving into my high school years
the required reading remained with Tolkien. The literary achievement of “The
Lord of the Rings” which was originally published in England in 1955 was immeasurable and was published here in the United Stated the first time in
1962. It was an enormous hit and has (obviously) remained so since.
The internet made it easier for people
of the same interests to gather and talk about the things they had in common and to (hopefully) make new friends. Rather than spending the time, money and energy to coordinate the various “physical gatherings”
such as national or even local conventions, “Cyber Space” became a much more convenient meeting place for members
to congregate.
I have always had this “thing”
as my friends call it about the English language; nobody really knows what to call it as I’m not a professor or a teacher;
just someone who is really “into” the proper pronunciation and enunciation of our language. That being said and the fact that my ability to come up with a screen name was growing to a near frustrating
impossibility, I was guided to one of the many sites that dealt primarily with language and the translations between them. In my case, due to the purpose of the search it was fantasy sites that provided instructional
courses on learning science fiction and fantasy languages such as Vulcan and Klingon.
With the release of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, other such languages as Elvish, Dwarf, Hobbit and
Orc were added to these web sites.
Thus was born the screen name of
Avaloyuru which is an interesting translation of my given name from the Lis’tarii lineage of elves. Additionally, having chosen to go with the Eleven names; I went ahead and searched out what type of “avatar”
I thought I would be most applicable to that choice.
Therefore, the use of what would
appear as a strange name was in reality a personal exercise in self-expression. It
is meant primarily to epitomize my fascination with the world of Science Fiction and Science Fiction Fantasy.
